It's been a great week in Hip-Hop. If you're a Hip-Hop head, new or old, we've been reminded of why we fell in love in the first place. The raw talent, the unforgiving punchlines, and simply the culture. We witnessed not only an epic beat battle between super producers Swizz Beatz and Just Blaze, but also Remy Ma's lyrical dismembering of Barbie Nicki Minaj. And in the midst, Future dropped two albums one week apart from each other, with a rumored third one on the way.
In a packed house, Kasseem "Swizz Beatz" Dean and Justin "Just Blaze" Smith duked it out for almost 3 hours playing songs each of them had produced over the years and 3/4 of the way through the battle of the beats live-stream Friday night (Feb. 24th), Swizz dropped an unreleased track featuring Jay-Z, Nas, DMX and Jadakiss. The track is rumored to be entitled "Zombies", an upcoming record from DMX's upcoming 8th studio album. Just mentioned, "This is for the people, it's not for either one of us." While Swizz added, "I think the culture needs this. It shouldn't be no politics involved...this was more about unity." They've now challenged other producers to join in: Pharrell vs. Timbaland, Havoc vs. Alchemist, Harry Fraud vs. Buckwild and Pete Rock vs. DJ Premier. Fingers crossed! Check out the live stream below, with the track starting at the 2:27:12 mark.
Reminisce "Remy Ma" Mackie, upon deciding she was done with the subliminal shots by Onika Tanya "Nicki Minaj" Maraj, dropped an almost 7-minute diss track over Nas' 2001 "Ether", entitled "shETHER". Following Remy's verse on PHresher's "Wait A Minute", Nicki took a few shots at Rem on Gucci Mane's "Make Love". Apparently, Rem wasn't speaking on Nicki, but being that Nicki came at Remy, she shot back with "shETHER" and moved Nicki to the first house on Front Street. On the track, Rem speaks on Nicki's lack of street cred, her sleeping with radio personality Ebro Darden of Hot 97, putting Meek Mill on a 3 month nookie probation due to her butt implants popping, plus soo much more. A new diss track, "Child's Play" is expected to drop soon; after the official artwork was released on the 26th. Until the second drop, check out the record below that Nicki has yet to lyrically respond to.
On the 17th, Future released his 6th studio album, Future, with 17-tracks. The self-titled album includes zero features and was created to inspire the Hip Hop heavyweight of his old style when he was underground. On the album, the Atlanta rapper gives us an extra dose of Future - the street soldier. A week later, he followed the already chart-topping album with HNDRXX, "The album I always wanted to make", says Future in an Instagram post. On this project which does include features (The Weeknd & Rihanna), Future in turn shows us his other persona, Future Hendrix. Also containing 17 tracks, HNDRXX channels his recent Trap-R&B sound similar to his sophomore album Honest. According to NPR, "there are already unconfirmed reports that the Atlanta rapper and his label Epic will follow up this second release with a third album.' Until then, check out both Future and HNDRXX below.
